Purpose of the Role

Volunteers play a vital role in enhancing the lives of adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities by offering companionship, support, and engagement in meaningful daily activities. This position helps create a positive, inclusive, and enriching environment that encourages independence and community participation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist program staff in implementing daily activities such as art, music, exercise, and life/job skills training.
  • Support participants during community outings, volunteer opportunities, and special events.
  • Encourage and model appropriate social interaction, communication, and teamwork.
  • Help maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all participants.
  • Provide one-on-one or small group support as directed by program staff.
  • Assist with meal or snack preparation, setup, and cleanup.
  • Participate in special projects, holiday celebrations, or fundraising events as available.

Qualifications

  • Genuine interest in working with adults with disabilities.
  • Patience, empathy, and good communication skills.
  • Ability to follow directions and work collaboratively with staff.
  • Reliability and commitment to scheduled volunteer times.
  • Prior experience in disability services, education, or recreation is a plus—but not required!

Training and Support

  • Volunteers receive orientation and ongoing training in disability awareness, program procedures, and participant support.
  • Staff supervision and mentorship provided during all shifts.
