About the visit
The Center for Achieving Independence recently visited the Neighbor Project, a nonprofit organization that helps individuals and families work toward first-time homeownership.
Our group had the opportunity to learn more about the organization’s mission and the support it provides through affordable housing, savings plans, and practical financial guidance. For many families, homeownership can feel out of reach. The Neighbor Project helps make that goal feel more possible through education, planning, and community support.
Learning about the path to homeownership
During our visit, Curtis Spivey, Public Engagement Specialist, welcomed our group and shared information in a clear, engaging way. He explained topics like budgeting, credit, and mortgages using practical examples that helped make complex ideas easier to understand.
For CAI participants, this was a valuable opportunity to learn about an important part of adult independence and long-term stability.
What home means to different people
One of the most meaningful parts of the visit was the conversation about what “home” means. Participants shared different ideas about what makes a home feel safe, comfortable, and personal.
This discussion helped show that homeownership is not only about finances. It is also about security, belonging, and creating a space that reflects each person’s needs and goals.
Continuing our community connection
We are grateful to the Neighbor Project and Curtis Spivey for welcoming our group and sharing more about their work in the community.
CAI looks forward to staying connected and giving back through a volunteer opportunity at a home site later this summer. Experiences like this help our participants build knowledge, explore important life concepts, and strengthen community connections.
